Pokémon Types
Introduction
Every Pokémon has one or two types. Types determine which moves a pokemon can learn, how much damage a move does when it hits, and how effective an opponent's move is against them.
Defense
Depending on the type of a pokemon and the type of the move hitting the pokemon, the damage will be different. Let's take for instance a pokemon of only Fighting type like .
- Will receive default damage (x1) from moves of type Fighting like .
- Will receive super effective damage (×2) from moves of type Fairy like .
- Will receive resisted damage (×½) from moves of type Rock like .
- Will receive immune damage (×0) from moves of type Ghost like .
When a Pokémon has two types, the multipliers are applied together. For example if we take a pokemon of type Fighting but also with type Rock like
- For moves of type Fighting like like now it will receive super effective damage (×2). Because Fighting it doesn't resits it (x1) and Rock is weak to it (×2). So x1 * x2 = x2.
- For moves of type Fairy like it will receive super effective damage (×2). Because Fighting is weak to it (x2) and Rock doesn't resist it (×1). So x2 * x1 = x2.
- For moves of type Rock like it will receive double resisted damage (x¼). Because Fighting resits it (x½) and Rock alse resists it (x½) too. So x½ * x½ = x¼.
- For moves of type Ghost like it will keep receiving immune damage (×0). Because Fighting is immune to it (×0) and Rock doesn't matter (×1). So x0 * x1 = x0.
You can use the type matchup calculator to see the result for other combinations. Or check the type chart below for all the combinations.

Pick the attacking type (the move’s type) and one or two defender types (the target’s types) to see the resulting damage multiplier.

Type chart
The table below shows the damage multiplier when a move of a given type (attacker) hits a Pokémon of a given type (defender). Rows are the defender’s type, columns are the move’s type.

Offense
When a pokemon has the same type as the move, the damage will be increased by 50% (x1.5). Let's take for instance a pokemon of type Fighting like learning the move Instead of the Base Power of 30, it will now be 45 (30 * 1.5 = 45). This is called Same-type attack bonus (STAB).
Tera type
Terastallizing lets you change a Pokémon's type for the rest of the battle (once per battle). Defensively, the Pokémon becomes only its chosen Tera type; offensively, it can gain or boost STAB on that type. For the full breakdown—including double STAB and how to plan Tera in the team builder, see the Terastallization guide.
